B roads, as a definition, is a figment of my imagination. Well, Montgomery and I know what they are but your average citizen has no idea and will never approach one even if prodded with a sharp dip stick. Wow, I just had images of ninjas fighting for world domination using dip sticks instead of swords. Would make a kick ass made-for-TV movie.
So. After the ninjas finish their fighting and disappear in a cloud of smoke you might want to take a drive to the hospital to get treatment for all the tiny holes where they stabbed you. In this every day scenario you would take a main road to get to your location as quickly as possible. These roads are the main arteries of your city and the British call them A roads. Kind of. Let’s not pay too much attention to the British while we’re creating classifications for types of roads. Not as if they refined the English language.
You’re with me so far right? The A roads are the main roads where people get stuck in traffic and curse the fact that they’re in a car when they should be somewhere else. These are the roads that pump the majority of drivers in start stop fashion with traffic lights in 50 meter intervals and pot holes in 15 meter intervals. They are also the main arteries between cities and states. Very important roads but certainly not where you and I want to be. If my calculations are correct you and I are looking for the B roads.
Parallel to many Freeways are the gorgeous B roads. Often overlooked and neglected by the majority of drivers they are scenic routes that possibly once served as an A road. With the advancement of engineering and as a necessity due to higher car densities, we’ve laid waste to forests and drilled holes in mountains to create the straight and comfortable Freeways. A B road on the other hand might not be the most comfortable thing to drive on. It will take you longer and you will encounter many corners one after the other. Oh the joy. Golf clap for B roads.
They run through National Parks where you’re surrounded by trees that create sprinkles of sunlight to warm your soul. They can be found winding their way as they connect quaint country towns ignored by the ominous Freeways. They often get neglected by your GPS as if they had leprosy. Mostly deserted but for the car or bike enthusiast rhythmically negotiating the winding corners, they truly are the only road we drive on for the sake of driving.
