Woke up at 5 this morning for my first Wakefield Park track day with the MX5 Club of NSW. I had paid up over a month ago and was really looking forward to it. Weather checks were done daily with forecasts predicting rain as far back as a month. By yesterday more accurate reports predicted heavy rain. I now know what they meant by heavy rain.

The day started well enough with manageable amounts of water streaming down the circuit. Wakefield Park is on a slanted lot so the water was coming down the hill and crossing the track wherever it could. Everyone was taking it easy after the first car out spun off at the end of the first straight. More spin outs followed, each coming closer to the tyre walls with the last one hitting the wall. The driver lost control while steering straight with no brake or extra throttle input.

Lunch was called with hopes the rain might ease. It did the opposite and sure enough timing was cancelled and soon after the day was called. Most people had packed up and were on their way home anyway.

The MX5 club run a great day with friendly faces which ever way you turn. My instructor was a wonderful gentleman who turned out to be the original owner of my car. I bought it off the person he sold it to a year ago. He got to see it and drive it again which made me happy.

Despite only completing 2 laps, each costing me $100, I had a great time meeting new people and talking cars all day. Goulburn booted us out with torrential rain but also with a promise of better weather next time.
